Culture and Community: The Foundation of NCON
Culture is what binds us together—it is our shared stories, language, values, and celebrations. For the Nepalese Community of Newcastle (NCON), culture is the foundation on which we build unity and belonging.
- Language: Speaking Nepali keeps our identity strong. Teaching it to children ensures that they stay connected to their roots.
- Values: Respect for elders, hospitality (Atithi Devo Bhava – "Guests are like gods"), and communal harmony are core Nepalese values we continue to practice.
- Community Spirit: From helping newcomers settle to organising cultural events, NCON reflects the sajha spirit (togetherness) of Nepal.
- Integration with Australia: By sharing food, festivals, and traditions with the wider Newcastle community, we build cultural exchange and mutual respect.
Culture gives us identity and confidence. It helps the younger generation understand who they are, while strengthening community pride.
